BLäNK RUNNING

By now you should be familiar with Blänk, a trio hailing from an unusual combination of Atlanta and Sàpmi, a remote corner in the north of Sweden. Having released two extraordinary albums to date, You’ve Never Been To Sàpmi (2009) and Only Built For Northern Lights (2015), the band are now back with third. ‘Running’ is one of the first tracks we’ve heard, and it’s a notable departure for Blänk, in all the right ways. Whilst it is still heavily rooted in the hip-hop / electronic textures that earned them serious accolade in albums past, ‘Running’ has a new-found depth, with mid-tempo beats and spacey synths – all underpinned by a dark, dense bass. The overall effect is that Blänk are maturing in every sense, a sentiment echoed in their statement about the forthcoming album: “The album is about baring the pain and perspectives of the weary soul that's lived through it all. At this point it's not about being depressed or celebrating wins, it's about recognizing all those things are a part of a larger journey that shapes the person one becomes.” If this is the journey that Blänk are on, we can’t wait to hear where they end up next. Keep an eye out for Weary Soul which is due out on 7th April. - HM
